BABYLON - Series 02 0f 04
BABYLON, Part 2 “Compromises with Babylon“.
“ They say, If a man put away his wife, and she go from him, and become another man’s, shall he return unto her again? shall not that land be greatly polluted? but thou hast played the harlot with many lovers; yet return again to me, saith the LORD. Lift up thine eyes unto the high places, and see where thou hast not been lien with. In the ways hast thou sat for them, as the Arabian in the wilderness; and thou hast polluted the land with thy whoredoms and with thy wickedness. Therefore the showers have been withholden, and there hath been no latter rain; and thou hadst a whore’s forehead, thou refusedst to be ashamed.” Jeremiah 3:1-3
Who was the prophet speaking of?
“ The LORD said also unto me in the days of Josiah the king, Hast thou seen that which backsliding Israel hath done? she is gone up upon every high mountain and under every green tree, and there hath played the harlot. And I said after she had done all these things, Turn thou unto me. But she returned not. And her treacherous sister Judah saw it. And I saw, when for all the causes whereby backsliding Israel committed adultery I had put her away, and given her a bill of divorce; yet her treacherous sister Judah feared not, but went and played the harlot also. And it came to pass through the lightness of her whoredom, that she defiled the land, and committed adultery with stones and with stocks. And yet for all this her treacherous sister Judah hath not turned unto me with her whole heart, but feignedly, saith the LORD.” Jeremiah 3: 6-10
Is there a prophetic parallel to Adventism of today? Has the Lord withheld the “Latter Rain“?
Yes, yes: “Ye mountains of Gilboa, let there be no dew, neither let there be rain, upon you, nor fields of offerings:…” 2Samuel 1:21
“Those who cannot discern between him that serveth God and him that serveth Him not, may be charmed with these societies that have no connection with God, but no earnest Christian can prosper in such an atmosphere. The vital air of heaven is not there. His soul is barren, and he feels as destitute of the refreshing of the Holy Spirit as were the hills of Gilboa of dew and rain.” Selected Messages, Vol.2, 126.3 [The reader may say this is applicable to a personal level, not to a corporate level. Is it so?]
“There are many flippant talkers of Bible truth, whose souls are as barren of the Spirit of God as were the hills of Gilboa of dew and rain. But what we need is men who are thoroughly converted themselves and can teach others how to give their hearts to God. The power of godliness has almost ceased to be in our churches. And why is this? The Lord is still waiting to be gracious; He has not closed the windows of heaven. We have separated ourselves from Him. We need to fix the eye of faith upon the cross and believe that Jesus is our strength, our salvation.” Testimonies, Vol. 5, 166.3
“It is selfishness also that prompts the feeling, on the part of workers, that their judgment must be the most reliable and their methods of labor the best or that it is their privilege in any way to bind the conscience of another. Such was the spirit of the Jewish leaders in Christ’s day. In their self-exaltation the priests and rabbis brought in such rigid rules and so many forms and ceremonies as to divert the minds of the people from God and leave Him no chance to work for them. Thus His mercy and love were lost sight of. My brethren, do not follow in the same path. Let the minds of the people be directed to God. Leave Him a chance to work for those who love Him. Do not impose upon the people rules and regulations, which, if followed, would leave them as destitute of the Spirit of God as were the hills of Gilboa of dew or rain.” Testimonies, Vol. 5, 727.2
“Legal religion will not answer for this age. We may perform all the outward acts of service and yet be as destitute of the quickening influence of the Holy Spirit as the hills of Gilboa were destitute of dew and rain. We all need spiritual moisture, and we need also the bright beams of the Sun ofRighteousness to soften and subdue our hearts. We are always to be as firm as a rock to principle. Bible principles are to be taught and then backed up by holy practice.” Testimonies. Vol.6, 417.3
“These rejecters of light will remain barren deserts, where no refreshing, healing waters flow, and their ministrations as barren of moisture as were the hills of Gilboa, where there was neither dew nor rain. They are not clothed with divine unction and convey no blessing to others. They might humble their hearts and confess their wrongs, and break Satan’s hold upon them. They might break the fetters which education, prejudice, or habits have forged. Would they only inquire of God, in the spirit of penitence, they would find Him. Then they would not set up their own will, but go where the Spirit of the Lord leads; they would be guided by Him.” Testimonies to Ministers, 413.2
“As a people, we have preached the law until we are as dry as the hills of Gilboa that had neither dew nor rain. We must preach Christ in the law, and there will be sap and nourishment in the preaching that will be as food to the famishing flock of God. We must not trust in our own merits at all, but in the merits of Jesus of Nazareth. Our eyes must be anointed with eye-salve. We must draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to us, if we come in his own appointed way. O that you may go forth as the disciples did after the day of Pentecost, and then your testimony will have a living ring, and souls will be converted to God.” Review and Herald, March 11, 1890, par. 13
Who is modern Israel?
“What a lesson is this to men holding positions of responsibility today in the church of God! What a solemn warning to deal faithfully with wrongs that bring dishonor to the cause of truth! Let none who claim to be the depositaries of God’s law flatter themselves that the regard they may outwardly show toward the commandments will preserve them from the exercise of divine justice. Let none refuse to be reproved for evil, nor charge the servants of God with being too zealous in endeavoring to cleanse the camp from evil-doing. A sin-hating God calls upon those who claim to keep His law to depart from all iniquity. A neglect to repent and to render willing obedience will bring upon men and women today as serious consequences as came upon ancient Israel. There is a limit beyond which the judgments of Jehovah can no longer be delayed. The desolation of Jerusalem in the days of Jeremiah is a solemn warning to modern Israel, that the counsels and admonitions given them through chosen instrumentalities cannot be disregarded with impunity.” Prophets and Kings, 416.2
“Jeremiah’s message to priests and people aroused the antagonism of many. With boisterous denunciation they cried out, “Why hast thou prophesied in the name of the Lord, saying, This house shall be like Shiloh, and this city shall be desolate without an inhabitant? And all the people were gathered against Jeremiah in the house of the Lord.” Jeremiah 26:9. Priests, false prophets, and people turned in wrath upon him who would not speak to them smooth things or prophesy deceit. Thus was the message of God despised, and His servant threatened with death.” IBID, 417.1
“For forty years did unbelief, murmuring, and rebellion shut out ancient Israel from the land of Canaan. The same sins have delayed the entrance of modern Israel into the heavenly Canaan. In neither case were the promises of God at fault. It is the unbelief, the worldliness, unconsecration, and strife among the Lord’s professed people that have kept us in this world of sin and sorrow so many years.—Manuscript 4, 1883. (Evangelism, 696.2)
“Satan is continually seeking to overcome the people of God by breaking down the barriers which separate them from the world. Ancient Israel were enticed into sin when they ventured into forbidden association with the heathen. In a similar manner are modern Israel led astray. “The god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.” [2 Corinthians 4:4 ] Great Controversy, 508.2 (1888 edition)
“Conformity to worldly customs converts the church to the world; it never converts the world to Christ. Familiarity with sin will inevitably cause it to appear less repulsive.” IBID, 509.1
“The tempter often works most successfully through those who are least suspected of being under his control. The possessors of talent and education are admired and honored, as if these qualities could atone for the absence of the fear of God, or entitle men to his favor. Talent and culture, considered in themselves, are gifts of God; but when these are made to supply the place of piety, when, instead of bringing the soul nearer to God, they lead away from him, then they become a curse and a snare.” IBID, 509.2
The message: “Babylon is fallen” is to be repeated, and that with great power.
“In the days of the Reformation, the gentle and pious Melancthon declared, "There is no other church than the assembly of those who have the word of God, and who are purified by it." Adventists, seeing that the churches rejected the testimony of God's word, could no longer regard them as constituting the church of Christ, "the pillar and ground of the truth;" and as the message, "Babylon is fallen," began to be proclaimed, they felt themselves justified in separating from their former connection.” IBID, 237.2
“The whole earth is to be lightened with the glory of the Lord. The pure in heart shall see God. It isthose who are following the Lamb whithersoever He goeth that will receive power from that angel that came down from heaven “having great power.” The first message is to be repeated proclaiming the second advent of Christ to our world. The second angel’s message is to be repeated, “Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird. For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies” [Revelation 18:2, 3]. Manuscript Releases, Vol. 16, 40.2
No matter what SDA Organization you may be a part of: SDA(1863); SDA Reform Movement (1914), Free SDA, Historic SDA (1996), Independent Ministries, ETC. Here are the facts, you be the judge:
1) The church is returning to Egypt: “It is not for lack of knowledge that God’s people are now perishing. They will not be condemned because they do not know the way, the truth, and the life. The truth that has reached their understanding, the light which has shone on the soul, but which has been neglected or refused, will condemn them. Those who never had the light to reject will not be in condemnation. What more could have been done for God’s vineyard than has been done? Light, precious light, shines upon God’s people; but it will not save them unless they consent to be saved by it, fully live up to it, and transmit it to others in darkness. God calls upon His people to act. It is an individual work of confessing and forsaking sins and returning unto the Lord that is needed. One cannot do this work for another. Religious knowledge has accumulated, and this has increased corresponding obligations. Great light has been shining upon the church, and by it they are condemned because they refuse to walk in it. If they were blind they would be without sin. But they have seen light and have heard much truth, yet are not wise and holy. Many have for years made no advancement in knowledge and true holiness. They are spiritual dwarfs. Instead of going forward to perfection, they are going back to the darkness and bondage of Egypt. Their minds are not exercised unto godliness and true holiness.” Testimonies, Vol.2, 123.2
2) The church is in a backslidden condition:
“A prayer-meeting will always tell the true interest of the church-members in spiritual and eternal things. The prayer-meeting is as the pulse to the body; it denotes the true spiritual condition of the church. A lifeless, backslidden church has no relish for the prayer-meetings. Young men and women of no depth of religious experience; who are vain and proud and frivolous, can feel no satisfaction in engaging in religious exercises. They prefer to pass the time in flirtations or reading novels, or in other ways of pleasing and gratifying the feelings of the natural heart.” PH152 7.1 - Special Testimonies Concerning the Workers in the Pacific Press (recommendation No. 5 of 14) [How often are prayer meetings held and are they conducted in a reverent manner?]
3) The church in a Laodicean condition:
“3:15 I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot.3:16 So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.3:17 Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:3:18 I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.3:19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.” Revelation 3:15-19
“The message to the Laodicean church is applicable to our condition.
“How plainly is pictured the position of those who think they have all the truth, who take pride in their knowledge of the Word of God, while its sanctifying power has not been felt in their lives. The fervor of the love of God is wanting in their hearts, but it is this very fervor of love that makes God’s people the light of the world. {1SM 357.1}
4) The church is in apostasy:

5)Hope in one direction:
“ There is a little hope in one direction: Take the young men and women, and place them where they will come as little in contact with our churches as possible, that the low grade of piety which is current in this day shall not leaven their ideas of what it means to be a Christian.” Manuscript Releases, Vol. 12, 333.1
6) The message for this time: “
“In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea, And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” Matthew 3:1,2
“From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” Matthew 4:17
7) A merciful God:
“ Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me. To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne. He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.” Revelation 3:20-23
“Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread? and your labour for that which satisfieth not? hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness Incline your ear, and come unto me: hear, and your soul shall live; and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies of David. Behold, I have given him for a witness to the people, a leader and commander to the people. Behold, thou shalt call a nation that thou knowest not, and nations that knew not thee shall run unto thee because of the LORD thy God, and for the Holy One of Israel; for he hath glorified thee. Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near: Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.” Isaiah 55:1-9

WHO IS BABYLON?
BABYLON - Part 01
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=2J035s-jBnY#t=1829s
“In Revelation 14, the first angel is followed by a second, proclaiming, "Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication." [REV. 14:8.] The term Babylon is derived from Babel, and signifies confusion. It is employed in Scripture to designate the various forms of false or apostate religion. In Revelation 17, Babylon is represented as a woman, a figure which is used in the Bible as the symbol of a church, a virtuous woman representing a pure church, a vile woman an apostate church.” Great Controversy,380.3, 1888 Edition
“Babylon is said to be "the mother of harlots." By her daughters must be symbolized churches that cling to her doctrines and traditions, and follow her example of sacrificing the truth and the approval of God, in order to form an unlawful alliance with the world. The message of Revelation 14 announcing the fall of Babylon, must apply to religious bodies that were once pure and have become corrupt. Since this message follows the warning of the Judgment, it must be given in the last days, therefore it cannot refer to the Romish Church, for that church has been in a fallen condition for many centuries. Furthermore, in the eighteenth chapter of the Revelation, in a message which is yet future, the people of God are called upon to come out of Babylon. According to this scripture, many of God's people must still be in Babylon. And in what religious bodies are the greater part of the followers of Christ now to be found? Without doubt, in the various churches professing the Protestant faith. At the time of their rise, these churches took a noble stand for God and the truth, and his blessing was with them. Even the unbelieving world was constrained to acknowledge the beneficent results that followed an acceptance of the principles of the gospel. In the words of the prophet to Israel, "Thy renown went forth among the heathen for thy beauty; for it was perfect through my comeliness, which I had put upon thee, saith the Lord God." But they fell by the same desire which was the curse and ruin of Israel,--the desire of imitating the practices and courting the friendship of the ungodly. "Thou didst trust in thine own beauty, and playedst the harlot because of thy renown." IBID, 382.3
[This state of events, is right upon us! It is time to realize the times and pick up the work that has been neglect. The 3rd Angel’s messages will be proclaimed with power and thousands and even millions will make their final decision. ’Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall: For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.’ 2 Peter 1:10,11]
“Thus the message of the third angel will be proclaimed. As the time comes for it to be given with greatest power, the Lord will work through humble instruments, leading the minds of those who consecrate themselves to his service. The laborers will be qualified rather by the unction of his Spirit than by the training of literary institutions. Men of faith and prayer will be constrained to go forth with holy zeal, declaring the words which God gives them. The sins of Babylon will be laid open. The fearful results of enforcing the observances of the church by civil authority, the inroads of Spiritualism, the stealthy but rapid progress of the papal power,--all will be unmasked. By these solemn warnings the people will be stirred. Thousands upon thousands will listen who have never heard words like these. In amazement they hear the testimony that Babylon is the church, fallen because of her errors and sins, because of her rejection of the truth sent to her from Heaven. As the people go to their former teachers with the eager inquiry, Are these things so? the ministers present fables, prophesy smooth things, to soothe their fears, and quiet the awakened conscience. But since many refuse to be satisfied with the mere authority of men, and demand a plain "Thus saith the Lord," the popular ministry, like the Pharisees of old, filled with anger as their authority is questioned, will denounce the message as of Satan, and stir up the sin-loving multitudes to revile and persecute those who proclaim it.” Great Controversy,606.2, 1888 edition.
“As the controversy extends into new fields, and the minds of the people are called to God's down-trodden law, Satan is astir. The power attending the message will only madden those who oppose it. The clergy will put forth almost superhuman efforts to shut away the light, lest it should shine upon their flocks. By every means at their command they will endeavor to suppress the discussion of these vital questions. The church appeals to the strong arm of civil power, and in this work, papists and Protestants unite. As the movement for Sunday enforcement becomes more bold and decided, the law will be invoked against commandment-keepers. They will be threatened with fines and imprisonment, and some will be offered positions of influence, and other rewards and advantages, as inducements to renounce their faith. But their steadfast answer is, "Show us from the Word of God our error,"--the same plea that was made by Luther under similar circumstances. Those who are arraigned before the courts make a strong vindication of the truth, and some who hear them are led to take their stand to keep all the commandments of God. Thus light will be brought before thousands who otherwise would know nothing of these truths.” IBID 607.1
“No longer have the hosts of evil power to keep the church captive; for "Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city," which hath "made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication;" and to spiritual Israel is given the message, "Come out of her, My people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues." Verse 8; 18:4. As the captive exiles heeded the message, "Flee out of the midst of Babylon" (Jeremiah 51:6), and were restored to the Land of Promise, so those who fear God today are heeding the message to withdraw from spiritual Babylon, and soon they are to stand as trophies of divine grace in the earth made new, the heavenly Canaan.” Prophets and Kings, 715.1
Dear Brother M: [LETTER TO ONE WHO HAD COME TO THE CONCLUSION THAT THE SEVENTH-DAY ADVENTIST CHURCH HAD FALLEN INTO THE LOW SPIRITUAL STATE DESCRIBED AS BABYLON.--COMPILERS.]
“Your letter addressed to me was received at the beginning of the Sabbath.... I should advise you to attend the school, and not to leave this country until you become thoroughly settled in your mind as to what is truth. I sincerely hope that you will attend this term of school and learn all you can in regard to this message of truth that is to go to the world.” Selected Messages Vol.2, 63.1
“The Lord has not given you a message to call the Seventh-day Adventists Babylon, and to call the people of God to come out of her. All the reasons you may present cannot have weight with me on this subject, because the Lord has given me decided light that is opposed to such a message.” IBID, 63.2
“I do not doubt your sincerity or honesty. I have written long letters at different times to those who were accusing the church of Seventh-day Adventists of being Babylon, that they were not handling the truth. You think individuals have prejudiced my mind. If I am in this state, I am not fitted to be entrusted with the work of God. But this matter has been brought before my mind in other cases where individuals have claimed to have messages for the Seventh-day Adventist Church, of a similar character, and the word has been given me, "Believe them not." "I have not sent them, and yet they ran." IBID, 63.3
[These statements were given than, how is it with the SDAChurch or her daughters, of today? Any different than the fallen Protestant denomination? Have they not rejected light, precious light - Present Truth?]
“The term Babylon, derived from Babel, and signifying confusion, is applied in Scripture to the various forms of false or apostate religion. But the message announcing the fall of Babylon must apply to some religious body that was once pure, and has become corrupt. It cannot be the Romish Church which is here meant; for that church has been in a fallen condition for many centuries. But how appropriate the figure as applied to the Protestant churches, all professing to derive their doctrines from the Bible, yet divided into almost innumerable sects. The unity for which Christ prayed does not exist. Instead of one Lord, one faith, one baptism, there are numberless conflicting creeds and theories. Religious faith appears so confused and discordant that the world know not what to believe as truth. God is not in all this; it is the work of man,--the work of Satan.” Spiritual Gifts, Vol.4, 232.2
“In Revelation 17, Babylon is represented as a woman, a figure which is used in the Scriptures as the symbol of a church. A virtuous woman represents a pure church, a vile woman an apostate church. Babylon is said to be a harlot; and the prophet beheld her drunken with the blood of saints and martyrs. The Babylon thus described represents Rome, that apostate church which has so cruelly persecuted the followers of Christ. But Babylon the harlot is the mother of daughters who follow her example of corruption. Thus are represented those churches that cling to the doctrines and traditions of Rome and follow her worldly practices, and whose fall is announced in the second angel's message.” IBID, 233.1
“Since the rejection of the first message, a sad change has taken place in the churches. As truth is spurned, error is received and cherished. Love for God, and faith in his word, have grown cold. The churches have grieved the Spirit of the Lord, and it has been in a great measure withdrawn. The words of the prophet Ezekiel are fearfully applicable:
‘Son of man, these men have set up their idols in their heart, and put the stumbling-block of their iniquity before their face. Should I be inquired of at all by them?’ ‘I the Lord will answer him that cometh according to the multitude of his idols.’ [EZE. 14:3, 4.] Men may not bow down to idols of wood and stone, but all who love the things of the world and take pleasure in unrighteousness have set up idols in their hearts. The majority of professed Christians are serving other gods besides the Lord. Pride and luxury are cherished, idols are set up in the sanctuary, and her holy places are polluted.’ IBID, 237.3
“Adventists, seeing that the churches rejected the testimony of God's Word, could no longer regard them as constituting the church of Christ, "the pillar and ground of the truth;" and as the message, "Babylon is fallen," began to be proclaimed, they felt themselves justified in separating from their former connection.” Story of Redemption, 366.1
“Since the rejection of the first message, a sad change has taken place in the churches. As truth is spurned, error is received and cherished. Love for God and faith in His Word have grown cold. The churches have grieved the Spirit of the Lord, and it has been in a great measure withdrawn.” IBID, 366.2
"My brother, I learn that you are taking the position that the Seventh-day Adventist Church is Babylon, and that all that would be saved must come out of her. You are not the only man whom the enemy has deceived in this matter. For the last forty years, one man after another has arisen, claiming that the Lord has sent him with the same message; but let me tell you, as I have told them, that this message you are proclaiming, is one of the Satanic delusions designed to create confusion among the churches. My brother, you are certainly off the track. The second angel's message was to go to Babylon [the churches] proclaiming her downfall, and calling the people to come out of her. This same message is to be proclaimed the second time. 'And after these things I saw another angel come down from heaven, having great power; and the earth was lightened with his glory. And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird. For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies. And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues. For her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities.' Review and Herald, September 12, 1893 par. 14
"My brother, if you are teaching that the Seventh-day Adventist Church is Babylon, you are wrong. God has not given you any such message to bear. Satan will use every mind to which he can attain access, inspiring men to originate false theories, or go off on some wrong tangent, that he may create a false excitement, and thus divert souls from the true issue for this time. I presume that some may be deceived by your message, because they are full of curiosity and desire for some new thing.” IBID, par. 15
"It makes me feel sad indeed that you should be deceived in any way by the suggestions of the enemy; for I know the theory that you are advocating is not truth. In advancing the ideas you do, you will do great injury to yourself and to others. Do not seek to misinterpret, and twist, and pervert, the testimonies to substantiate any such message of error. Many have passed over this ground, and have done great harm. As others have started up full of zeal to proclaim this message, again and again, I have been shown that it was not truth.” IBID, par. 16
[A Sabbath keeping church can not be termed ”Babylon”, it may be in a Laodicean condition, but as long as it proclaims the Sabbath truth, it can not be termed: “BABYLON“! However, if it ever compromises on this point it will be joined to “Babylon” and faithful souls will be called out of them too! (Revelation 18:1-4)]
“The Lord is soon to come; there must be a refining, winnowing process in every church, for there are among us wicked men who do not love the truth. There is need of a transformation of character. Will the church arise and put on her beautiful garments, the righteousness of Christ? It is soon to be seen who are vessels unto honor. "And after these things I saw another angel come down from heaven, having great power; and the earth was lightened with his glory. And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird." "Then shall ye return, and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him that serveth God and him that serveth him not. For, behold, the day cometh, that shall burn as an oven; and all the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly, shall be stubble; and the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the Lord of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch. But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of Righteousness arise with healing in his wings." Review and Herald, March 19, 1895 par. 5
“The Lord has given his church a special work. The crisis is right upon us. We have only, as it were, a moment of time. We must now take our Bibles, and in the Holy Spirit's power, proclaim the great truth for these last days. It will not be long before every one shall have heard the warning and made his decision. Then shall the end come. "There followed another angel, saying, Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication. And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand, the same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb." Review and Herald, July 26, 1898 par. 5
“People are suffering for want of a knowledge of the truth. They do not understand what they must do to be saved. Unless the gospel is preached clearly, simply, over and over again, line upon line, precept upon precept, Satan will cast his shadow between the sinner and God. God will be represented as a stern, unforgiving Judge. Christ taught in simplicity, making everything connected with the salvation of the soul plain and easy to be understood; and thus his ambassadors are to present the truth. There must be given to the world the message that the way of repentance and faith is now made plain through him who had power to lay down his life and to take it again. "He that believeth in me," Christ declared, "though he were dead, yet shall he live." IBID, July 26, 1898 par. 6
“This parable is not a representation of open sinners, but of those who profess Christ. The bride is the church who is waiting for the second appearing of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. In the proclamation of the first and second angels of Revelation 14, a special message has come to our world. Speaking of these messages, John says: "I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people, saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters. And there followed another angel, saying, Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication." Review and Herald, October 31, 1899 par. 7
“The first and second angels' messages are united and made complete in the third. -John says: "And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand, the same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb." IBID, October 31, 1899 par. 8
“The first, second, and third angels' messages are to be repeated. The call is to be given to the church: "Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird. For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth have waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies. . . . Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues. For her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities." IBID, October 31, 1899 par. 11
“Many who went forth to meet the Bridegroom under the messages of the first and second angels, refused the third, the last testing message to be given to the world, and a similar position will be taken when the last call is made. “ Review and Herald, October 31, 1899 par. 12
“Every specification of this parable should be carefully studied. We are represented either by the wise or by the foolish virgins. There are many who will not remain at the feet of Jesus, and learn of him. They have not a knowledge of his ways; they are not prepared for his coming. They have made a pretense of waiting for their Lord. They have not watched and prayed with that faith which works by love and purifies the soul. They have lived a life of carelessness. They have heard and assented to the truth, but they have never brought it into their practical life. The oil of grace is not feeding their lamps, and they are not prepared to enter into the marriage supper of the Lamb. The oil is the holy grace that is sent from heaven; and there must be an inward adorning with that grace, if we would stand when he appears. IBID, October 31, 1899 par. 13
“The angel, the mighty angel from heaven, is to lighten the earth with his glory, while he cries mightily with a loud voice, "Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen" (Rev. 18:2). Oh, how I wish the church to arise and shine because the glory of the Lord has risen upon her. What can we not do in God if every human agency is doing its very utmost! "Without Me ye can do nothing" (John 15:5). We would lose faith and courage in the conflict if we were not sustained by the power of God. Every form of evil is to spring into intense activity. Evil angels unite their powers with evil men, and as they have been in constant conflict and attained an experience in the best modes of deception and battle, and have been strengthening for centuries, they will not yield the last great final contest without a desperate struggle. All the world will be on one side or the other of the question. The battle of Armageddon will be fought, and that day must find none of us sleeping. Wide-awake we must be, as wise virgins having oil in our vessels with our lamps. What is this? Grace, Grace.” Manuscript Releases, Vol.14, 286.3
“A similar work will be accomplished when that other angel, represented in Revelation 18, gives his message. The first, second, and third angels' messages will need to be repeated. The call will be given to the church, "Come out of her, My people, that ye be not partakers of her sins." "Babylon, the great, is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird. For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies. . . . Come out of her, My people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues: for her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities" [Rev. 18:2-5]. Manuscript Releases, Vol.16 270.1
Take each verse of this chapter, and read it carefully, especially the last two: "And the light of a candle shall shine no more at all in thee; and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee: for thy merchants were the great men of the earth; for by thy sorceries were all nations deceived. And in her was found the blood of prophets, and of saints, and of all that were slain upon the earth." IBID, 270.2
“The parable of the ten virgins was given by Christ Himself, and every specification should be carefully studied. A time will come when the door will be shut. We are represented either by the wise or the foolish virgins. We cannot now distinguish, nor have we authority to say, who are wise and who foolish. There are those who hold the truth in unrighteousness, and these appear outwardly like the wise.”
“The power of the Holy Ghost must be upon us, and the Captain of the Lord's host will stand at the head of the angels of heaven to direct the battle. Solemn events before us are yet to transpire. Trumpet after trumpet is to be sounded, vial after vial poured out one after another upon the inhabitants of the earth.” 1888 EGWhite Materials, 762.1
“Then pointing out the timing of the second angel's message of Revelation 14 announcing the fall of Babylon, Ellen White takes the position that that message is aimed particularly at the "daughters," "religious bodies that were once pure and have become corrupt," and in a sense "cannot refer to the Romish Church." But was the Roman Church exempt? Was it not Babylon? To remedy what seemed to some to be an inconsistency in wording, the sentence in question, without in any way changing the arguments put forth for the fallen state of both the "mother" and the "daughters," the word alone was added, making the sentence in question read in the new edition: E. G. White BIOGRAPHY, Vol. 06, 327.4
The message of Revelation 14, announcing the fall of
Babylon, must apply to religious bodies that were once pure and
have become corrupt. Since this message follows the warning of
the judgment, it must be given in the last days; therefore it
cannot refer to the Roman Church alone, for that church has
been in a fallen condition for many centuries.--Page 383. IBID, 327.5

EARTHLINESS DEFINED! Part 02
ON KEEPING THE HEART. NO. 11
Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life. - Proverbs 4:23. {ARSH January 15, 1857, p. 81.11}
(Concluded) {ARSH January 15, 1857, p. 81.12}
I NOW proceed to improve and apply the subject:{ARSH January 15, 1857, p. 81.13}
I. You have seen that the keeping of the heart is the great work of a Christian, in which the very soul and life of religion consists, and without which all other duties are of no value in the sight of God. Hence, to the consternation of hypocrites and formal professors, I infer, {ARSH January 15, 1857, p. 81.14}
1. That the pains and labors which many persons have undergone in religion are of no value, and will turn to no good account. Many splendid services have been performed by men, which God will utterly reject: they will not stand on record in order to an eternal acceptance, because the performers took no heed to keep their hearts with God. This is that fatal rock on, which thousands of vain professors dash and ruin themselves eternally; they are exact about the externals of religion, but regardless of their hearts. O how many hours have some professors spent in hearing, praying, reading and conferring! and yet, as to the main end of religion, they might as well have sat still and done nothing, the great work, I mean heart-work, being all the while neglected. Tell me, vain professor, when did you shed a tear for the deadness, hardness, unbelief or earthliness of your heart? And do you think your easy religion can save you? If so, you must invert Christ’s words, and say,Wide is the gate and broad is the way that leadeth to life, and many there be that go in thereat! Hear me, ye self deluding hypocrite; you who have put off God with heartless duties; you who have acted in religion as if you had been blessing an idol; you who could not search your heart, and regulate it, and exercise it in your performances; how will you abide the coming of the Lord? how will you hold up your head before him, when he shall say, O you dissembling, false-hearted man! how could you profess religion? with what face could you so often tell me that you loved me, when you knew in your conscience that your heart was not with me? O tremble to think what a fearful judgment it is to be given over to a heedless and careless heart, and then to have religious duties instead of a rattle to quiet and still the conscience! {ARSH January 15, 1857, p. 81.15}
2. I infer for their humiliation, that unless thepeople of God spend more time and pains about their hearts than they ordinarily do, they are never like to do God much service, or to possess much comfort in this world. I may say of that Christian who is remiss and careless in keeping his heart, as Jacob said of Reuben, Thou shalt not excel. It grieves me to see how many Christians there are who live at a poor, low rate, both of service and comfort, and who go up and down, dejected and complaining. But how can they expect it should be otherwise, while they live so carelessly? O how little of their time is spent in the closet, in searching, humbling, and quickening their hearts! {ARSH January 15, 1857, p. 81.16}
Christian, you say your heart is dead, and do you wonder that it is, so long as you keep it not with the fountain of life? If your body had been dieted as your soul has, that would have been dead too. And you may never expect that your heart will be in a better state until you take more pains with it. {ARSH January 15, 1857, p. 81.17}
O Christians! I fear your zeal and strength have run in the wrong channel; I fear that most of us may take up the Church’s complaint: “They have made me the keeper of the vineyards, but mine own vineyard have I not kept.” Two things have eaten up the time and strength of the professors of this generation, and sadly diverted them from heart-work.{ARSH January 15, 1857, p. 81.18}
1st. Fruitless controversies, started by Satan, I doubt not for the very purpose of taking us off from practical godliness, to make us puzzle our heads when we should be inspecting our hearts. How little have we regarded the observation: “It is a good thing that the heart be established with grace, and not with meats, (that is, with disputes and controversies about meats,) which have not profited them that have been occupied therein.” How much better it is to see men live exactly, than to hear them dispute with subtlety! These unfruitful questions, how have they rent the churches, wasted time and spirits, and taken Christians off from their main business! What think you, would it not have been better if the questions agitated among the people of God of late had been such as these: - “How shall a man distinguish the special from the common operations of the Spirit? How may a soul discern its first backslidings from God? How may a backsliding Christian recover his first love? How may the heart be preserved from unreasonable thoughts in duty? How may a bosom sin be discovered and mortified?” etc. Would not this course have tended more to the honor of religion and the comfort of souls? I am ashamed that the professors of this generation are yet insensible of their folly. O that God would turn their disputes and contentions into practical godliness! {ARSH January 15, 1857, p. 81.19}
2nd. Worldly cares and encumbrances have greatly increased the neglect of our hearts. The heads and hearts of multitudes have been filled with such a crowd and noise of worldly business that they have lamentably declined in their zeal, their love, their delight in God, and their heavenly, serious, and profitable way of conversing with men. How miserably have we entangled ourselves in this wilderness of trifles! Our discourses, our conferences, nay, our very prayers are tinged with it. We have had so much to do without, that we have been able to do but little within. And how many precious opportunities have we thus lost? How many admonitions of the Spirit have passed over unfruitfully? How often has the Lord called to us, when our worldly thoughts have prevented us from hearing? But there certainly is a way to enjoy God even in our worldly employments. If we lose our views of him when engaged in our temporal affairs, the fault is our own. Alas! that Christians should stand at the door of eternity, having more work upon their hands than their time is sufficient for, and yet be filling their heads and hearts with trifles! {ARSH January 15, 1857, p. 81.20}
3. I infer, lastly, for the awakening of all, that if the keeping of the heart be the great work of a Christian, then there are but few real Christians in the world. If every one who has learned the dialect of Christianity, and who can talk like a saint; if every one who has gifts and parts, and who can make shift to preach, pray, or discourse like a Christian: in a word, if all such as associate with the people of God and partake of ordinances may pass for Christians, then indeed the number is great. But alas! how few can be found, if you judge them by this rule, - how few are there who conscientiously keep their hearts, watch their thoughts, and look scrupulously to their motives! Indeed there are few closet-men among professors. It is easier for men to be reconciled to any other duties in religion than to these. The profane part of the world will not so much as meddle with the outside of any religious duties, and least of all with these; and as to the hypocrite, though he may be very particular in externals, you can never persuade him to undertake this inward, this difficult work; this work, to which there is no inducement from human applause; this work, which would quickly discover what the hypocrite cares not to know; so that by general consent this heart-work is left to the hands of a few retired ones, and I tremble to think in how few hands it is. {ARSH January 15, 1857, p. 81.21}
II. If the keeping of the heart is so important a business; if such great advantages result from it; if so many valuable interests be wrapt up in it, then let me call upon the people of God every where to engage heartily in this work. O study your hearts, watch your hearts, keep your hearts! Away with fruitless controversies and all idle questions; away with empty names and vain shows; away with unprofitable discourse and bold censures of others, and turn in upon yourselves. O that this day, this hour you would resolve upon doing so! {ARSH January 15, 1857, p. 81.22}
Reader, methinks I shall prevail with you. All that I beg for is this, that you would step aside oftener to talk with God and your own heart; that you would not suffer every trifle to divert you; that you would keep a more true and faithful account of your thoughts and affections; that you would seriously demand of your own heart at least every evening, O my heart, where hast thou been to-day, and what has engaged thy thoughts? {ARSH January 15, 1857, p. 81.23}
If all that has been said by way of inducement be not enough, I have yet some motives to offer you.{ARSH January 15, 1857, p. 82.1}
1. The studying, observing, and diligently keeping your own heart, will surprisingly help you to understand the deep mysteries of religion. An honest, well-experienced heart is an excellent help to the head. Such a heart will serve for a commentary on a great part of the Scriptures. By means of such a heart you will have a better understanding of divine things than the most learned (graceless) man ever had, or can have; you will not only have a clearer, but a more interesting and profitable apprehension of them. A man may discourse orthodoxly and profoundly of the nature and effects of faith, the troubles and comforts of conscience, and the sweetness of communion with God, who never felt the efficacy and sweet impression of these things upon his own soul. But how dark and dry are his notions compared with those of an experienced Christian! {ARSH January 15, 1857, p. 82.2}
2. The study and observation of your own heart will powerfully secure you against the dangerous and infecting errors of the times in which you live. For what think you is the reason why so many professors have departed from the faith, giving heed to fables? why have so many been led away by the error of the wicked? why have those who have sown corrupt doctrines had such plentiful harvests among us, but because they have met with a race of professors who never knew what belongs to practical godliness and the study and keeping of their hearts? {ARSH January 15, 1857, p. 82.3}
3. Your care and diligence in keeping your heart will prove one of the best evidences of your sincerity. I know no external act of religion which truly distinguishes the sound from the unsound professor. It is marvelous how far hypocrites go in all external duties; how plausibly they can order the outward man, hiding all their indecencies from the observation of the world. But they take no heed to their hearts; they are not in secret what they appear to be in public; and before this test no hypocrite can stand. They may, indeed, in a fit of terror, or on a death-bed, cry out of the wickedness of their hearts; but such extorted complaints are worthy of no regard. No credit, in law, is to be given to the testimony of one upon the rack, because it may be supposed that the extremity of his torture will make him say any thing to get relief. But if self-jealousy, care and watchfulness be the daily workings and frames of your heart, you have some evidence of your sincerity.{ARSH January 15, 1857, p. 82.4}
4. How comfortable and how profitable would all ordinances and duties be to you, if your heart was faithfully kept. What lively communion might you have with God every time you approach him if your heart was in a right frame! You might then say with David, “My meditation of Him shall be sweet.” It is the indisposition of the heart which renders ordinances and secret duties so comfortless to some. They strive to raise their hearts to God, now pressing this argument upon them, then that, to quicken and affect them; yet they often get nearly through the exercise before their hearts begin to be interested in it; and sometimes they go away no better than they came. But the Christian whose heart is prepared by being constantly kept, enters immediately and heartily into his duties; he outstrips his sluggish neighbor, gets the first sight of Christ in a sermon, the first seal from Christ in a sacrament, the first communication of grace and love in secret prayer. Now if there be any thing valuable and comfortable in ordinances and private duties, look to your heart and keep it, I beseech you. {ARSH January 15, 1857, p. 82.5}
5. An acquaintance with your own heart will furnish you a fountain of matter in prayer. The man who is diligent in heart-work, will be richly supplied with matter in his addresses to God. He will not be confused for want of thoughts; his tongue will not falter for want of expressions. {ARSH January 15, 1857, p. 82.6}
6. The most desirable thing in the world, viz., the revival of religion among a people, may be effected by means of what I am urging upon you. {ARSH January 15, 1857, p. 82.7}
O that I might see the time when professors shall not walk in a vain show; when they shall please themselves no more with a name to live, while they are spiritually dead; when they shall be no more a company of frothy, vain persons; but when holiness shall shine in their conversation, and awe the world, and command reverence from all that are around them; when they shall warm the heart of those who come near them, and cause it to be said, God is in these men of a truth. And may such a time be expected? Until heart-work becomes the business of professors, I have no hope of seeing a time so blessed! Does it not grieve you to see how religion is contemned and trampled under foot, and the professors of it ridiculed and scorned in the world? Professors, would you recover your credit? would you obtain an honorable testimony in the consciences of your very enemies? Then keep your hearts. {ARSH January 15, 1857, p. 82.8}
7. By diligence in keeping our hearts we should prevent the occasions of fatal scandals and stumbling-blocks to the world. Wo to the world because of offences! {ARSH January 15, 1857, p. 82.9}
Keep your heart faithfully, and you will be prepared for any situation or service to which you may be called. This, and this only can properly fit you for usefulness in any station; but with this you can endure prosperity or adversity; you can deny yourself, and turn your hand to any work. Thus Paul turned every circumstance to good account, and made himself so eminently useful. When he preached to others, he provided against being cast away himself: he kept his heart; and every thing in which he excelled seems to have had a close connection with his diligence in keeping his heart. {ARSH January 15, 1857, p. 82.10}
9. If the people of God would diligently keep their hearts, their communion with each other would be unspeakably more inviting and profitable. Then “how goodly would be thy tents, O Jacob, and thy tabernacles, O Israel!” It is the fellowship which thepeople of God have with the Father and with the Son that kindles the desires of others to have communion with them. I tell you, that if saints would be persuaded to spend more time and take more pains about their hearts, there would soon be such a divine excellence in their conversation that others would account it no small privilege to be with or near them. It is the pride, passion and earthliness of our hearts, that has spoiled Christian fellowship. Why is it that when Christians meet they are often jarring and contending, but because their passions are unmortified? Whence comes their uncharitable censures of their brethren, but from their ignorance of themselves? Why are they so rigid and unfeeling toward those who have fallen, but because they do not feel their own weakness and liability to temptation? Why is their discourse so light and unprofitable when they meet, but because their hearts are earthly and vain? But now, if Christians would study their hearts more and keep them better, the beauty and glory of communion would be restored. They would divide no more, contend no more, censure rashly no more. They will feel right one toward another, when each is daily humbled under a sense of the evil of his own heart. {ARSH January 15, 1857, p. 82.11}
10. Lastly: - Keep your heart, and then the comforts of the Spirit and the influence of all ordinances will be more fixed and lasting than they now are. Do the consolations of God seem small to you?’ Ah, you have reason to be ashamed that the ordinances of God, as to their quickening and comforting effects, should make so light and transient an impression on your heart. {ARSH January 15, 1857, p. 82.12}
Now, reader, consider well these special benefits of keeping the heart which I have mentioned. Examine their importance. Are they small matters? Is it a small matter to have your understanding assisted? your endangered soul rendered safe? your sincerity proved? your communion with God sweetened? your heart filled with matter for prayer? Is it a small thing to have the power of godliness? all fatal scandals removed? an instrumental fitness to serve Christ obtained? the communion of saints restored to its primitive glory? and the influence of ordinances abiding in the souls of saints? If these are no common blessings, no ordinary benefits, then surely it is a great and indispensable duty to keep the heart with all diligence. {ARSH January 15, 1857, p. 82.13}
And now are you inclined to undertake the business of keeping your heart? are you resolved upon it? I charge you, then, to engage in it earnestly. Away with every cowardly feeling, and make up your mind to encounter difficulties. Draw your armor from the word of God. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, in its commands, its promises, its threatenings; let it be fixed in your understanding, your memory, your conscience, your affections. You must learn to wield the sword of the Spirit (which is the word of God) familiarly, if you would defend your heart and conquer your enemies. You must call yourself frequently to an account; examine yourself as in the presence of the all-seeing God; bring your conscience, as it were, to the bar of judgment. Beware how you plunge yourself into a multiplicity of worldly business; how you practice upon the maxims of the world; and how you venture at all to indulge your depraved propensities. You must exercise the utmost vigilance to discover and check the first symptoms of departure from God, the least decline of spirituality, or the least indisposition to meditation by yourself, and holy conversation and fellowship with others. These things you must undertake, in the strength of Christ, with invincible resolution in the outset. And if you thus engage in this great work, be assured you shall not spend your strength for naught; comforts which you never felt or thought of will flow in upon you from every side. The diligent prosecution of this work will constantly afford you the most powerful excitements to vigilance and ardor in the life of faith, while it increases your strength and wears out your enemies. And when you have kept your heart with all diligence a little while; when you have fought the battles of this spiritual warfare, gained the ascendancy over the corruptions within, and vanquished the enemies without, then God will open the gate of heaven to you, and give you the portion which is promised to them that overcome. Awake, then, this moment; get the world under your feet; pant not for the things which a man may have, and eternally lose his soul; but bless God that you may have his service here, and the glory hereafter which he appoints to his chosen. {ARSH January 15, 1857, p. 82.14}
“Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is well pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.” - Flavel. {ARSH January 15, 1857, p. 82.15}

REVIEW OF T. M. PREBLE.
BY URIAH SMITH.
“He that is first in his own cause seemeth just; but his neighbor cometh and searcheth him.” Proverbs 18:17.
Preble. - “OF WHAT IS THE SABBATH A SIGN OR TYPE? Should the inquiry be raised by the objector,
whether I do not believe the seventh-day Sabbath of the Old Testament is
a type of the seventh millennium, or thousand years; I answer, yes.
Then, says the objector, How can you make out that the type will cease
to be observed until the antitype is reached? I answer, the same as
other types ceased to be observed, or kept, before the antitypes were
reached: as for example, look at the ‘high priest’ who went into ‘the
holy place’ once every year: {BSSL 22.5}
“‘The Holy Ghost this signifying, that the way into the holiest of all was not yet made manifest, while as the first tabernacle was yet standing; which was a figure
for the time then present, in which were offered both gifts and
sacrifices, that could not make him that did the service perfect, as
pertaining to the conscience; which stood only in meats and drinks, and
divers washings, and carnal ordinances, imposed on them until the time of reformation. But Christ being come a high priest of good things to come,
by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is
to say, not of this building; neither by the blood of goats and calves,
but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.” Hebrews 9:8-12. {BSSL 23.1}
“This says, - ‘Having obtained eternal redemption for us.’ But we have not really obtained this redemption yet; neither can we, until Christ comes ‘the second time without sin unto salvation.’ {BSSL 23.2}
“‘For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself,
now to appear in the presence of God for us: nor yet that he should
offer himself often, as the high priest entereth into the holy place
every year with blood of others; for then must he often have suffered
since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world
hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself. And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment; so Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear, the second time, without sin unto salvation.’ Hebrews 9:24-28. {BSSL 23.3}
“Thus, we see, that the Levitical priesthood was a type of the
priesthood of Christ; but the Levitical priesthood has been ‘changed,’
and, hence, the type has ceased to be observed; as we read in Hebrews 7:11, 12; - {BSSL 24.1}
“‘If therefore perfection were by the Levitical priesthood (for
under it the people received the law), what further need was there that
another priest should arise after the order of Melchizedek, and not be
called after the order of Aaron? For the priesthood being changed, there is made of necessity a change also of the law.’ {BSSL 24.2}
“But let us examine this still more, and see how clearly we can
establish the fact, that the priesthood of Christ is the antitype of the
Levitical priesthood; and although the type has ceased to be observed, yet the antitype is not yet reached in its completion: - {BSSL 24.3}
“‘For he of whom these things are spoken pertaineth to another
tribe, of which no man gave attendance at the altar. For it is evident
that our Lord sprang out of Judah; of which tribe Moses spake nothing
concerning priesthood. And it is yet far more evident: for that after
the similitude of Melchizedek there ariseth another priest, who is made,
not after the law of a carnal commandment, but after the power of an
endless life.’ Hebrews 7:13-16. {BSSL 24.4}
“Mark this last expression: - Our ‘priest’ is made ‘not after the law of a carnal commandment, but after the power of AN ENDLESS LIFE.’ But again:: - {BSSL 24.5}
“‘By so much was Jesus made a surety
of a better testament. And they truly were many priests, because they
were not suffered to continue by reason of death; but this man, because
he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood.’ Hebrews 7:22-24. {BSSL 24.6}
“Yes, praise God: - ‘By so much was Jesus made a surety of a better testament.’ (Verse 22.) {BSSL 24.7}
“And so it is with the Sabbath, it was a sign or type of that
‘rest’ - or ‘keeping of a Sabbath,’ (margin) - which ‘remaineth’ ‘to the
people of God’ (Hebrews 4:9); but as ‘the body is of Christ’ (Colossians 2:16, 17), we cannot trace the ‘shadow’ beyond the ‘body:’ but Christ has become our ‘surety’ of that ‘rest’ the same
as he was made ‘a surety of a better testament.’ And as Christ does not
fulfill the type of the priesthood until he comes out of the holy of
holies, or out of ‘heaven itself,’ to give ‘the people of God’ ‘an endless
life;’ so the type of the Sabbath will not be fulfilled until Christ
comes out ‘heaven itself’ to give ‘the people of God’ that ‘rest’ which
‘remaineth’ for them.’ And as the apostle says: {BSSL 24.8}
“‘Now of the things which we have spoken, this is the sum: We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens;
a minister of the sanctuary and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord
pitched, and not man. For every high priest is ordained to offer gifts
and sacrifices; wherefore it is of necessity that this man have somewhat
also to offer. For if he were on earth, he should not be a priest,
seeing that there are priests that offer gifts according to the law: who
serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things,
as Moses was admonished of God when he was about to make the
tabernacle; for see, saith he, that thou make all things according to
the pattern showed to thee in the mount. But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises.’ Hebrews 8:1-6.” {BSSL 25.1}
REPLY. - Of what, asks Eld. P., is the Sabbath a sign or type? Mark the expression, “a sign or type!”
Here he is guilty of Fallacy No.4, by connecting the word type with the
word sign, thereby covertly insinuating that they mean one and the same
thing. We have already alluded to the distinction between a sign and a
type. The word used for sign, where the Sabbath is called a sign, is (semeion),
which is defined thus: “A sign; i.e., a mark, token, by which anything
is known or distinguished; a token, pledge, assurance; a proof,
evidence, convincing token,” etc. The word for type, is a very different
word, namely, (tupos), which is defined, “A mark, impression, print of a stroke or
blow; a form, image, effigy, i.e., a statue; pattern, model; a type,
figure, emblem, that which exhibits a representation or likeness of
anything,” etc. The word for shadow, as in the expression, “A shadow of
things to come,” Colossians 2:17, is still another word, namely, (skia), and is defined as follows: {BSSL 25.2}
“A shade, a shadow; metaphorically, a shadow, i.e., a shadowing
forth, adumbration, in distinction from the perfect image or
delineation, and the reality.” From these definitions the reader will
see the plain distinction there is between a sign, and a type or shadow,
and how utterly erroneous it is to confound the one with the other. {BSSL 26.1}
But nevertheless Eld. P. has announced his belief that the Sabbath
is a type. He considers it a type of the seventh millennium; though
from some oversight, or perhaps from necessity, he has omitted to give
us any evidence for that position. We do not believe the Sabbath is a
type pointing forward to our future rest, but a memorial looking back to
creation; for the Scriptures uniformly and expressly so represent it.
Could he have given as good a reason for his position, would he not have
produced it? There is an insuperable objection that lies against his
view, which he has mentioned, but not removed. It is that if the Sabbath
is a type of the future millennium, it reaches up to that time, and
should be observed till then. No man can avoid this conclusion. Yet Eld.
P.’s position that the Sabbath is abolished, obliges him to take the
view that the type has ceased, before the antitype is reached. He
endeavors, however, to extricate himself from this dilemma by the
assertion that other types have ceased before reaching their antitypes,
and that this is of the same nature with them. Here we meet his
assertion with a universal and unqualified denial. No type can cease
until its antitype is reached. Common sense forbids the idea. His
lengthy quotations from Scripture to show that the priesthood of Christ
is the antitype of the Levitical priesthood, so far as our belief in
that doctrine is concerned, might have been omitted. There is no
controversy on that. But how, then, shall we account for the fact that
there are events in Christ’s ministration, still future, which were
typified by especial ceremonies under the former dispensation? Easily
enough. Paul has furnished us a key to this subject, and not to use it,
is to inexcusably expose ourselves to confusion and error. He makes two
plain and distinct statements, which set the matter in its true light.
One of them occurs in Hebrews, and reads as follows: “For the law,
having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the
things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year
continually, make the comers thereunto perfect.” Hebrews 10:1. Paul shows by this language that the system of types and shadows is to be taken together as a whole. “The law,”
he says, as a whole, “having a shadow of good things to come.” Hence we
cannot take each individual type and consider it as something complete
and distinct in itself, and trace it down till we reach the particular
event in this dispensation which it typifies. But the law as a system,
that whole dispensation with its typical work, foreshadowed the good
things of the gospel. The dividing line then must come between the
dispensations. No part of the former dispensation can lap over into
this. None of the shadows which went to make up that system, can
continue when that dispensation has given place to the new. The shadows
there cease because the particular economy which gave them existence
there closed; but in their appropriate places in this dispensation will
be found the antitypes of all those shadows which composed that system,
by which this, taken collectively, was foreshadowed. {BSSL 26.2}
The other statement referred to is Colossians 2:16, 17;
“Let no man therefore judge you in meat or in drink, or in respect of
an holy day, or of the new moon or of the sabbath days; which are a
shadow of things to come, but the body is of christ.” It is the little
word, of, which is important in this testimony for our present purpose,
“The body is of Christ:” that is to say, the body or antitype
of all these ceremonies is connected with the work of Christ, and will
be found in something pertaining to his ministration. As in the text
first quoted, Paul shows that it was the law system taken as a whole,
that contained the shadow, he here shows that it is the ministration of
Christ, taken as a whole, that contains the substance. And when the
ministration of Christ commences, the typical dispensation has given
place to the real, the shadow to the substance, and all things
pertaining to the former must cease, or we should have two ministrations
going on at the same time; which would be inadmissible. {BSSL 28.1}
The illustration often used on this subject, is, that the shadow
of a tree can be traced up to the tree itself. And this illustration is a
good one; for we must remember that every branch, or each individual
ceremony was not a separate and independent shadow of itself, to be
traced to a distinct tree in this dispensation; but that that
dispensation as a whole was the shadow, and this as a whole the tree
which cast it; and the shadow did reach down without interruption to the
introduction of this dispensation, where the tree commenced. It is here
that Eld. P. falls into Fallacy No.5, by making the types of that
dispensation, instead of component parts of one great whole, separate
and independent types of themselves. {BSSL 28.2}
But was not the Sabbath also a component part of that typical
whole? By no means. And here Eld. P. is guilty of another Fallacy, No.6,
by making the weekly Sabbath the same in nature, and a part of the same
system, as the typical sabbaths of the Jews. The Sabbath was
instituted, as we shall presently show, before ever the typical
dispensation was ordained; it was never incorporated into that
dispensation in such a manner as to be dependent on it for existence;
and its supposed antitype, the glorious seventh thousand years, is no
part of the antitypical ministration of Christ. There is nothing in the
antitypical work of the Saviour of which the weekly Sabbath can be shown
to be typical; hence it does not belong to that class of feasts and
sabbaths, the body of which is “of” Christ. If therefore the Sabbath is a
type, it stands out by itself, independent of everything else, and must
consequently exist till its direct antitype is reached. Thus Eld. P.
will find the laboring oar on this point still in his own hands. He will
find the burden of proof resting down more heavily than ever upon his
shoulders. We would that he had been prudent enough to avoid such a yoke
which no man is able to bear; but we would remind him that he may yet
cast it off by turning again to the truth; for the truth is
long-suffering, and will still receive those who seek her presence, not
withstanding they may have often unaccountably shut their eyes to her
gracious light. {BSSL 29.1}
Preble. - “ORIGIN OF THE SABBATH. If my position be right in regard to the design of the Sabbath; that is, that it was a ‘sign’ to ‘the children of Israel throughout their generations;’ then the origin
of the Sabbath has nothing to do with the particular point now under
consideration, and we need not multiply words about the question whether
it had its origin at the creation, or at the time of the Israelites’
coming out of Egypt. For be it remembered, that my point is this: that
the seventh-day Sabbath being a sign, or type, it was only to be
observed by a people under types and shadows; and the Gentiles not being
a typical people, they are not required to keep the typical Sabbath;
although it is their duty, as the duty of all Christians, to keep a
Sabbath, as I have already stated. Before I close I intend fully to
prove that the day for us to observe is ‘the first day of the week.’”
{BSSL 29.2}
REPLY. - In relation to the Sabbath as a sign, also of the
difference between a sign and a type, we have already spoken. A word now
in reference to its origin. The question of the origin of the Sabbath
presents perhaps a more formidable objection to Eld. P.’s position, than
any other portion of the subject. We can all see therefore how
fortunate it would be for him, could he by any means avoid meeting the
issue here. He attempts this in a very novel and summary way, and one
which would be vastly convenient, if it was only lawful. If the Sabbath
be a sign or type, he says, here again confounding the word sign with
type, then no matter about its origin. But hold, friend P.; for the
origin of the Sabbath is the very point that determines
whether the Sabbath is a type or not; and to ignore this, is begging
the whole question. If the Sabbath originated with types, and rests on
the same basis, and belongs to the same system with them, then it is a
type, the controversy is ended, and we will never more take up our pen
to argue its obligation upon gospel Christians. But if the Sabbath
originated far back of all types and shadows, if it rests on a different
basis altogether, and is infinitely higher in its nature, and sustains a
universal relation to all the inhabitants of this earth, then verily it
is not a type, and no man can rightfully attempt to degrade it into a
typical office. In examining the claims of any institution, its origin
is the first, if not the main, question to be considered. We are the
more surprised, therefore, that so thorough a controversialist as Eld.
P., in efforts apparently so sincere to spread light on the Sabbath
question, should so entirely pass by this division of the subject. {BSSL 30.1}
When, then, and how, did the Sabbath originate? We answer, It
originated in Paradise, before man had fallen, and before sin had
entered into the world. It will be unnecessary to “multiply words” to
prove this point. We need do scarcely more than quote the plain language
of the inspired record. In the first chapter of Genesis, we have a
plain, unvarnished narrative of the events of the first six days of
time. It tells what was done on each successive day. The narrative goes
right on, in the following chapter, in the same spirit, and same
construction, and gives the events of the seventh day. Can we then on
any ground claim that what is said of the seventh day is not a record of
what then took place on that day, but of what was done to it 2500 years
afterward in the days of Moses? The idea is unnatural, uncalled for,
unreasonable, preposterous. Yet this is the only loop-hole of escape
from the position that the Sabbath was instituted in Paradise. Set this
down, then, as an indisputable fact, that what is said of the seventh
day in Genesis 2, is a record of what was done on, and to, the seventh day in the beginning, and not at any subsequent period. {BSSL 31.1}
And what were those events. First God rested upon
the day. Sabbath means rest; and any day to be a Sabbath, or rest day,
must be a day on which some one has rested. The Sabbath of the Lord must
be the day on which he rested. He did rest upon the seventh day. We
have no record of his ever resting upon any other day. No other day
therefore ever has been, or can be at the present time, the Sabbath of
the Lord. But God does more than this to make it a Sabbath for man. He
added his blessing. “And God blessed the seventh day.” We have no
account of his ever blessing any other day. No other day therefore even
has been, or can be at the present time, the blessed or holy Sabbath of
the Lord. He then sanctified it, that is, set it apart to a holy or
sacred use. No other day has ever been thus set apart for man, hence no
other day ever has been, or can be at the present time, binding on man,
as a divine institution. This blessing and sanctification were placed
upon it after the first seventh day had passed. Hence this action had no
reference to the day that had passed, but to the seventh days that were
to come in the future, And the fact that the day was sanctified or set
apart, clothes the institution with a divine command at the very
beginning, and sends it forth with all the authority of Jehovah so long
as that sanctification shall last. {BSSL 31.2}
The fact that the day was sanctified is the record that a command
was given for its observance. This is at once apparent when we consider
that it is utterly impossible to sanctify or set apart to a religious
use, any institution without plainly giving directions or a command how
it should be used. See instances in Exodus 19:12, 23; Joshua 20:7; Joel 1:14; 2:15; 2 Kings 10:20, 21; Zephaniah 1:7, margin. And when God in giving his law on Sinai, spoke of his rest-day, he declared
it to be the Sabbath day at the time it was blessed of God. “Wherefore
the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.” But it was blessed in
the very beginning as we have seen, and hence was the Sabbath day at
that time. We have no record that the blessing has ever been removed, or
the sanctification taken off; hence it is the blessed and sanctified
rest-day of Jehovah still. {BSSL 32.1}
We are now prepared to consider the bearing of this argument upon
the question whether or not the Sabbath is a type. All types point
forward to something connected with the work of redemption. They have no
other design than this. Hence no type would ever have been introduced
had not man fallen and needed a redemption. They all originate therefore
this side of the fall. But the Sabbath was instituted before the fall,
before man needed redemption, and before anything was, or could have
been, reasonably, given to foreshadow that work. All the types that were
ever instituted had no meaning except as they recognized the work of
Christ in redemption; but the seventh-day Sabbath was from creation a
holy day, and all the facts to which the fourth commandment points would
have been just as true as they are now if Christ had never died. While
the types, among which were the typical sabbaths of the Jews, recognized
man’s guilt, and signified God’s willingness to save, the seventh-day
Sabbath would have occupied the same place it now occupies, and ever has
occupied, even if man had never sinned. The typical sabbaths were
shadows of things to come; the seventh-day Sabbath was and is a memorial
of things past. The two classes of sabbaths point in opposite
directions, and hence cannot be classed together. The one pointed
forward to redemption; the other points back to creation: “For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day; wherefore
the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.” The seventh-day
Sabbath therefore is not a type, if reason and revelation may decide
this question. Had Eld. P. more carefully considered this point, we
think he would have saved himself from the assumption that the Sabbath
is a type, and of so coolly passing by, on that assumption, the question
of its origin as having no bearing on the subject. {BSSL 33.1}
We request the reader to give special attention to the point now
under consideration. Go back to the beginning. Behold Adam and Eve, in
innocence and holiness in the garden of Eden. Behold God giving to them
as the parents and representatives of the whole human family, his holy
Sabbath, the memorial of his own great work, designed to ever keep in
the mind of man his own origin, the knowledge of the true God, and the
allegiance due from man to him. And who shall tell us which one of the
descendants of Adam might first override this great memorial, and
transgress this divine command? Are not all equally interested in the
events of creation? Do not all the world need a memorial of the true
God? Do they not all need the same great bulwark against atheism and
idolatry? {BSSL 34.1}
There was another holy institution given to man at the same time
with the Sabbath, the institution of marriage. It is well that this
guardian institution of our domestic peace should be sacredly cherished;
but why should the golden link that binds us to our Maker be trampled
in the dust? We cannot better close these brief allusions to the origin
of the Sabbath than with the following impressive language of J. W.
MORTON: “Why is there now such bitter opposition to an institution that
was once the delight of both God and man? Why do men hate with such
perfect hatred what Jehovah made, and blessed, and sanctified, before
sin had entered into the world? Why should this daughter of
Innocence be spurned from every door, and loaded with the damning
reproach of Judaism, while her twin sister, Marriage, sucks the breasts
and is dandled upon the knees of Orthodoxy?” {BSSL 34.2}
